Born on 6 November 1971 in Pavlogradka village of Omsk region, Igor Gorbenko was a trainee of Avangard hockey club in Omsk.
As a forward he played for Yermak (Angarsk), Avangard (Omsk), Sibir (Novosibirsk), Rubin (Tyumen), Zapolyarnik (Norilsk), SKA-Amur/Amur (Khabarovsk), Motor (Barnaul), Samorodok (Khabarovsk).
Gorbenko has been coaching since 2004. During his coaching career, he worked for Lokomotiv Children and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve (Yaroslavl). He was the head coach in Atlant Mytishchi (Mytishchi), Loko (Yaroslavl), Kapitan (Stupino), and a coach for Russkie Vityazi (Chekhov), CSKA (Moscow), Lokomotiv (Yaroslavl).
Coaching achievements: Champion of Russia (2015), silver medalist of Russian championship (2016, 2020), winner of Continental Cup (2015, 2016, 2017), winner of Opening Cup (2016).
